How can Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman make you an effective marketer?
In this vlog, Grant explains what you can learn from method acting.
When Marlon Brando was in The Men, he stayed in bed for a month, so he understood what it was like to be an injured veteran.
When Robert De Niro was going to be in Taxi, he actually worked 12 hour shifts in New York, so he could understand the character.
And when Dustin Hoffman started in Marathon Man, he deprived himself of so much sleep that Laurence Olivier famously turned around to him and said, ‘Why don’t you try acting? It’s so much easier’
Of course, Laurence Olivier was making a joke, but because these actors used method acting and really had these experiences, these feelings and the emotions, they could bring it to their characters and really make them come to life.
It’s impossible to be an effective marketer and communicator if you do it all academically. You need to feel what your customers feel, experience what they experience, understand their realities. Call it Method Marketing if you like, but without hanging out with customers and having similar experiences, you’ll never fully understand them and. therefore, never be able to communicate as well as you could otherwise.
Now, if you, excuse me, my next product is smoke alarms.
